Letter to Chancellor Fox on police agression at UCSD protests

The following letter was sent to Chancellor Fox and UCSD Chief of Police Orville King on November 16th, 2011.

Dear Chancellor Fox:

On behalf of the SDFA (San Diego Faculty Association), I write to
express concern in relation to the events that took place on the UCSD
campus during protests in defense of public education on Wednesday,
November  9.  The SDFA does not mean to engage in disputes about the
exact sequence of events or accuse specific individuals of anything.
We write only to inform you that many bystanders and participants feel
that the aggressive behavior of the Police on 9 November was
unwarranted and came close to being counter-productive, especially
when protestors traversed the pedestrian crossing on Gilman Drive.

Protests are currently breaking out at most UC campuses and are
likely to do so in the foreseeable future.  As at UCSD on 9 November,
students at different campuses also feel that the over-reaction of the
Police frequently contributes to unnecessary violence. For example,
the Berkeley Faculty Association has gathered the signatures of
hundreds of faculty who were outraged by the excessive use of force by
Police on the Berkeley campus last week. The SDFA is pleased to note,
and certainly appreciates that the Police at UCSD do not have a
tradition of aggressive or violent response. We hope that this pattern
will continue as groups mobilize peacefully on campus.  A word of
reassurance on this score would be appreciated.

On behalf of the Board of the SDFA, sincerely

Ivan Evans
President, SDFA
