Dear SDFA Members,

Welcome to the new year in SDFA! Please join our Member Meeting and Social Hour Thursday Nov. 6, 4-6 pm at Cecil’s Lounge in the UCSD Faculty Club [map]. At 4pm we’ll share updates on SDFA’s ongoing work with CUCFA and AAUP, strategize about current and upcoming campaigns, and meet in working groups on immigration, defending the UC system, and others. At 4:30 we’ll transition to social time. We encourage all SDFA members to join, and to bring an interested non-member.

Drinks and hors d’oeuvres are on us!

If you can’t make the meeting but want to get involved, please email SDFA chair ameeth.vijay@gmail.com and let us know what issues concern you and what working groups you might be interested in. We currently have working groups to support immigrants in the UCSD community; defend the UC system, students, faculty, and scientific expertise; outreach to UC faculty; and communicate with members and beyond.

We look forward to seeing you at the Faculty Club on November 6th. If you’re unable to make it, read on for news about what we’ve been up to.

UPDATES
The recent attacks on higher education in the USA pose grave threats to academic freedom, faculty rights, and students’ access to affordable, high-quality education. SDFA is proud to stand up against these attacks, and our recent victories have renewed our hope. For example:

  • We successfully lobbied UCSD’s state representatives to reduce UC’s budget cut from 8% to 0%.
  • Along with the AAUP, systemwide Faculty Associations, and UC unions, we filed suit against the Trump administration for cutting funding to UC research. We argue that the administration is using “financial coercion” to violate Constitutional first amendment rights. Members provided testimonials of harm for the case.
  • We filed suit against UCOP to gain access to the Trump administration demand letter of UCLA.
  • We sent a letter to UCSD administration asking them about possible PII disclosures, and are working with the Academic Senate to prevent them from continuing to release PII to the federal government.
  • Our membership grew by 30% this year, which means we can sustain and expand these important efforts!
